Shinonome Jinpachi has returned to the Kyoto Prefectural Police’s First Investigative Division as a specially commissioned detective. Meanwhile, Natsuki Asako, a team leader, has just been assigned to the division. Shinonome and Asako solve the same cases with completely different investigation methods. Shinonome has many information sources that he cultivated through his years of investigation. He would hit the streets and gather information that is not considered to have a direct relationship with a case. Asako has many fans within the police because she has moved from post to post. She is adapt at mobilising these allies and makes use of her inexperience in investigations to carry out daring ones. When these two investigation methods overlap, there will never be a typical investigation and unknown facts a step ahead of the solution will emerge. A series of six arson attacks occurs within Kyoto City. While residents in the immediate area are getting jittery, a casualty emerges in the seventh case of arson and the Kyoto Prefectural Police sets up an investigation task force. Asako is pysched up for her first case, but annoyed with Shinonome who does not answer his mobile phone no matter how many times she calls. In fact, Shinonome, who is a widower, is in the middle of an arranged introduction to a former teacher, Mita Yuriko. Garbage collection points and vacant houses were deliberately set ablaze in the previous six arson attacks. But this time, a Japanese-style house was targeted and the 77-year-old physically disabled lady who lived alone failed to escape and was burned to death. The head of the First Investigative Divsion, Marugami Toshiaki, concludes that the crime was committed by the same criminal, but Asako feels something is odd about the series of incidents. If these were crimes for pleasure, the crimes would often be committed around a 2 km radius from the area where the arsonist lives. However, the locations of the seven fires are scattered about. Led by Asako, Team Natsuki is assigned to do legwork in the vicinity of the crime scenes. But Asako instructs a team member, Yoshida Mio, to check the backgrounds of the victims. On the other hand, Shinonome, who has been partnered with the young detective, Owada Ryota, encounters an elementary school student, Iijima Sho, shoplifting at a bread shop. After that, they discover Sho in all the surveillance camera footage near the seven locations. Is he the arsonist?

Hashizume Isao as Shinonome Jinpachi
A specially commissioned detective of the Kyoto Prefectural Police’s First Investigative Division. He retired during the baby boomer generation and is asked by his former boss to return as a specially commissioned detective of the First Investigative Division for the sake of handing down investigation techniques. Although he used to be called the “legendary detective fiend”, he looks nothing like it now that his wife preceded him in death. He always ends up disappearing off to town without notice, and the people around him talk behind his back, calling him “useless”. He even constantly gets yelled at by the new team leader, Natsuki Asako, who says he is a “bath cover”, absent when needed, but present when not needed. However, he has formed a wide and deep information network from influential men of the underworld to high school girls. He looks like he is sitting idle, but he uses this network to dig up the truth of cases. At a glance, he seems like a wizened old man, but his keen perspective has not diminished. He is also very cool when he takes out the surge of anger on criminals. He is now searching for a marriage partner in order to fulfill his late wife’s last words that he remarry after her death.
Natori Yuko as Natsuki Asako
The leader of Team Natsuki of Kyoto Prefectural Police’s First Investigative Division. Rank: Inspector. She is a newcomer to the division as part of a trial by the top brass to make use of a female perspective in investigations. Although she has little investigation experience, she actually is a police professional who has built a career in all kinds of departments from working at the police box to the special assault team in 30 years. Because she has moved from department to department, she has impressive connections inside the organisation. She has countless fans including Takada Iwao, the head of forensics, due to her courage that leaves men astonished. Her usual phrase is, “I’m still not accustomed …” This is her excuse for disregarding the conventions and hierarchy of the police, and carrying out what she wants to do in one stroke. Although she gets irritated with Shinonome Jinpachi, in her heart, she acknowledges his network.
Wada Masato as Owada Ryota
A detective of Team Natsuki of Kyoto Prefectural Police’s First Investigative Division. A “relaxed” guy who causes his direct superior, Natsuki Asako, grief and even dumbfounds Shinonome Jinpachi. His only saving grace is his good nature. But on the other hand, Shinonome and Asako fail to realise that he can understand the mentality of psychotic crimes of the young generation, and at times, he startles the people around him.
Sakai Miki as Yoshida Mio
A detective of Team Natsuki of Kyoto Prefectural Police’s First Investigative Division. She watches both Shinonome Jinpachi and Natsuki Asako with a cold look. She does not ingratiate herself to anyone, and would dispassionately look at a situation as she works on an investigation. Contrary to her appearance, she is trained in martial arts and Owada Ryota is no match for her when it comes to arrests.
Tanaka Yoji as Takada Iwao
The head of the Kyoto Prefectural Police’s Forensic Department. Called the “Monster of Forensics”, many cases have been solved because of his discoveries and analysis. Because he is well-known for being a bigot and obstinate, most of the detectives including Owada Ryota pay no attention to him. However, he is actually a big fan of Natsuki Asako. He would readily accept even high-handed requests and turn over exceptional information. He is a reassuring ally to Asako.
Haba Yuichi as Marugami Toshiaki
The head of the Kyoto Prefectural Police’s First Investigative Division. Because he has climbed to the top by working his way up from a detective, he is high-qualified and has the confidence of the top brass as well as his subordinates. He regards Team Natsuki coolly and declares Asako’s appointment an “experiment”, but … …
