Story
A small old-fashioned candy store ‘Sakuraya’ stands inconspicuously in a nook of the old part of Tokyo. Sakurai Taro whose parents died young, struggles to protect the failing store which his grandmother Akiko runs, but it is not easy. Regular customers such as Shimazaki Akira who runs a bath house and Taro’s chilhood friend and aspiring scriptwriter Saegusa Hiroki hang out at the store’s backdoor. Taro eats candy with them and talks nonsense, like in his youth. However, he realises this unfettered, comfortable existence will end some day with the passage of time. Then Taro is reunited with his childhood friend Kimura Reiko who has come back home with her son Haruma after a divorce. He and his friends start to notice what is truly important to them as they face up to their pasts, dreams and pains.

Characters
Odagiri Joe as Sakurai Taro
After his father passed away when he was 5 and his mother when he was eight, he was raised by his grandparents. His grandfather died five years ago. He runs the candy store ‘Sakuraya’ with his grandmother Akiko, and is a big grandma’s boy. He has been working part-time late in the night in order to protect Sakuraya which only makes a profit of about 40,000 yen a month. At times he would succumb to worldly pleasures and end up going for sex service. He dropped out of a third-rate university. Although he is inept in everything, he is a single-minded guy with a kind heart.

Ono Machiko as Kimura Reiko
Sakurai Taro’s ex-classate and first love. She married at the age of 28, but got a divorced five years later because of her husband’s infidelity and Oedipus complex. She comes back to her hometown with her 5-year-old son Haruma. However, she is too proud to live in her family home and rents and apartment instead. She washes restaurant dishes during the day, but at night she starts to work at a pub.

Katsuji Ryo as Saegusa Hiroki
Sakurai Taro’s ex-classate. He aspires to be a scriptwriter and has been eking out a living through part-time jobs since graduating from high school. Lately, he has mostly been hanging out at Sakura during the day because ideas have not been coming to him. He lives alone in an apartment because his parents have moved to the countryside.

Yachigusa Kaoru as Sakurai Akiko
Sakurai Taro’s grandmother. The cat-loving owner of ‘Sakuraya’. Five years ago, she took over the candy store that her husband Kichitaro left to her. She remembers practically everything about the store’s customers. She feels inclined to protect Sakuraya which is full of memories of Kichitaro, but then again she feels that if this goes on, it will not be in Taro’s interest. So she hopes to close the store.
