Synopsis: In May 2007, a large crowd of reporters was gathered in front of a small opening created in the wall of a private hospital called Seiboshi Hospital in Kumamoto City. It was named “Stork’s Cradle”. This day was the start of the operation of a facility for people to annonymously deposit babies. Troubled by the spate of abandoned baby cases in the prefecture, the director of nursing Yasuda Yumiko (Yakushimaru Hiroko) and hospital director Hayami Keiji (Watabiki Katsuhiko) had decided six months ago to create a facility where parents who were unable raise their children could annonymously deposit them. However, the police and city expressed reservations about this unprecedented approach, and even the mass media and the public criticised it for encouraging child abandonment. Even so, Yumiko and Hayami wanted to save the lives of babies made vulnerable by parents who had no one to discuss pregnancy with and left it as it is or parents indifferent to child raising. They were proactive and tireless in bringing the matter to people’s attention. This paid off and obtained the approval of mayor Katayama Yoshifumi (Sasaki Kuranosuke). The facility was finally established. Mothers came from across the country to deposit babies at the cradle. Niiyama Ayumi (Arimura Kasumi), a high school student living in Kanto, was pregnant with a classmate’s child. But she did not want to trouble her mother Hiroko (Tomita Yasuko) who was busy working for the sake of her and her younger brother, and did not tell her about her situation. At that moment, Ayumi saw the news about the “Stork’s Cradle” on television. After she gave birth alone at home, she came to Seiboshi Hospital with her baby. Yumiko and the staff were there for each one of them and put their heads together to think about what would be best for mother and baby. On the other hand, the words Katayama spoke at the time he gave permission to convert the hospital’s premises, stayed with Yumiko. “What will you say if the day comes when the children deposited at the cradle grow up and say that they lost their parents because of the cradle?” It has been six years since the start of operations. The babies deposited in the year that the cradle was opened will soon be elementary school students and the time has come for Yumiko and the staff to squarely face the question which they have no answer to … …
