Story
Onchi Hajime works for the national airline. He assumes the position of labour union leader despite his reluctance because of his senior’s plan. Seeking to improve the poor working conditions which can cause fatal accidents, Onchi and his deputy Gyoten Shiro have intense confrontations at negotiations with the airline’s management led by director Domoto Shinsuke. Onchi considers air safety the highest priority and is honest to a fault at times. He gets ostracised by management and relegated to a remote place overseas while the pragmatic Gyoten distances himself. Gyoten ingratiates himself with the leadership and moves up in pursuit of his own ideal company. Not long after that, a large passenger aircraft crashes in an unprecedented tragedy for the national airline which has neglected air safety. Returning to Japan, Onchi is put in charge of the bereaved families and engages them sincerely. Meanwhile, the Japanese government demands that Kunimi Masayuki of a cotton spinning business, become the airline’s new chairman in order to rebuild the company. Kunimi sends for Onchi and makes him conduct an inquiry into the improprieties rampant in the organisation as the manager of the chairman’s office. Onchi works on rehabilitating the airline after its fall from grace, but finds Gyoten, who has climbed to the position managing director, standing in his way … …
