Story
Makabe Yukiko is a detective in the First Investigative Division’s Emergency Investigation Response Team. They are a team of interrogation experts that goes by the name of Kintori. Surrounded by idiosyncratic veteran interrogators, she pursues the truth hidden behind cases as she plays mind and word games with tough criminals. The dead body of 28-year-old deliveryman Komaki Shusuke is found inside the delivery van of a courier service. The cause of death is drug poisoning. However, there is one queer point about the dead body. Komaki died in the driver’s seat with an open umbrella which he should not have needed for some strange reason. Right after that, an elderly widow Shirakawa Tamiko, who has no kin, gives herself up to the police. But worryingly, even her memory of turning herself in gets fuzzy in less than a few hours. The mystery deepens when none of the fingerprints inside the vehicle match Tamiko’s and the drug used in the crime is not found in her house. The case is designated an important one and the Kintori are put in charge of the interrogation. However, Yukiko is forced into an unexpectedly hard fight with Tamiko. Which are lies, which are truths? Yukiko feels impatient with Tamiko who is not straightforward, but does everything she can to gain a foothold. However, the more she probes, the more Tamiko’s real intentions get enveloped in fog … …
Characters
Amami Yuki as Makabe Yukiko
A detective of Kintori of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police’s First Investigative Division. She was the first female head of the SIT. However, she failed in the negotiations with the criminal in a certain case. She was then assigned to the Kintori. She used to be a loner but felt the sense of unity in the Kintori through investigations and values the role of each team member. She detests crime due to an unsolved case that occurred in the past and approaches interrogations with the belief that she will “strip suspects bare”.
Tanaka Tetsushi as Kajiyama Katsutoshi
The director who presides over Kintori of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police’s First Investigative Division. He is caught in the rank conscious police organisation and web of turf wars but plots to get ahead in his career. Although he is a non-career officer, he has been promoted time and again because of his ability to make hard-headed decisions and get things done. He is a man who leads his subordinates with decisiveness. He has known Makabe Yukiko well for ages, and had his eye on her expert negotiation skills. He selected her to be a member of Kintori and has immense trust in his team members.
Hayami Mokomichi as Watanabe Tetsuji
A detective of the First Homicide Investigation Section of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police’s First Investigative Division. He and section head Kenmotsu Daijiro are a team and called Motsunabe Combi by the people around them. He is a man of superhuman strength who has no sense of fear or subtleties in tactics. An excellent subordinate, he will readily obey anything that his boss Kenmotsu orders.
Suzuki Kosuke as Kenmotsu Daijiro
The head of the First Homicide Investigation Section of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police’s First Investigative Division. He is hostile towards Kintori which takes away the criminals that he and his men have arrested. A petty man who is easily flustered. Although he gradually recognises the real ability of the Kintori, his favourite phrase is still “We’re not errand boys”.
Okura Koji as Iwaki Kazuhisa
The head of criminal investigations at the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. He has made “Open Police” his motto for the purpose of dispelling mistrust and criticism of the police due to past injustice. He sees Kajiyama Katsutoshi as a rival and is privately uninterested in the activities of Kintori which Kajiyama leads. But he takes advantage of them in his attempt to solidify his own position.
Denden as Hishimoto Susumu
A detective of Kintori of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police’s First Investigative Division. Because the majority of his detective life was devoted to yakuza groups, his appearance as well as his manner of speech is like a yakuza. A walking dictionary on crime, he nails criminals with flattery, threats and deals. He used to think female police officers are a hindrance and now makes fun of Makabe Yukiko as a “middle-aged woman”, but he recognises her capability.
Osugi Ren as Nakata Zenjiro
A detective of Kintori of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police’s First Investigative Division. A good man who is genial and compassionate enough to be called Hotoke no Zen-san. He believes even the most brutal criminal is capable of mending his or her ways. He does not waste techniques on criminals, but is sincere with them and takes them down through sentiment. A relationship of trust has been established with Makabe Yukiko through interrogations.
Kohinata Fumiyo as Koishikawa Haruo
A detective of Kintori of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police’s First Investigative Division. He’s the most intellectual member of the team. Although he takes a soft approach with criminals, he will drive them into a corner with thorough perceptiveness. He feels suspicious about Makabe Yukiko’s transfer to Kintori. He is usually all smiles. However, no one believes that he is truly smiling. Although he mocks and speaks cynically to Makabe Yukiko, he recognises her as a capable colleague.
