Synopsis: In December 1993, Watase (Kamikawa Takaya), a young detective of Urawa Police Precinct, and veteran detective Narumi Kenji (Takahashi Katsumi) rush to a real estate agent where a murder has occurred. The victims are the owner and his wife. There is a pool of blood around them and also evidence of an illegal moneylending which leads the police to suspect the crime was motivated by money. Narumi and Watase investigate people in the ledger, and learn that only Kusunoki Akihiro’s (Nakamura Tomoya) alibi is not water tight so they take him in. He denies the crime even though he has a grudge. Narumi’s interrogation of Kusunoki is harsh and he keeps this up for several days which is even bewildering for Watase. Kusunoki’s parents (Ito Shiro) are also not allowed to meet him. Watase who has to face them, is at a loss when they desperately insist on their son’s innocence. But after conclusive evidence emerges indicating that Kusunoki is the criminal, Narumi’s interrogation grows harsher. Kusunoki continues to maintain his innocence but learns that his parents came to see him and at long last confesses to the crime. In 1995, he begins to challenge the death penalty an appeals court. In an about-face, he insists once again on his innocence and claims the interrogation the police put him under was unreasonable. However, Kusunoki gets the death penalty. This ruling weighs on Watase who wonders if their interrogation was truly proper and the justice which Narumi talked about was correct? Only the public prosecutor Onda Tsuguhiko (Funakoshi Eiichiro) offers Watase kind words. Two years later in 1997, Watase heads to a detached house where a murder has taken place. The criminal was discovered just after he entered the house to steal and killed the owner’s wife and son. However, as the investigation progresses, Watase is reminded of Kusunoki’s case four years earlier. He is bothered by the many similarities in the murder weapon and MO. Sakomizu Jiro (Takahashi Tsutomu) is brought in as a suspect in the case. The police is confident that Sakomizu is the murderer because of his attitude and the physical evidence, and Watase is ordered to get his confession. However, Watase begins investigating on his own based on some tentative theory. This would develop into a big case which erodes public confidence in the police. 20 years go by. In 2017, a journalist of a weekly magazine Taguchi Kyoko (Maeda Atsuko) shows up in front of Watase who has become an inspector with the Saitama Prefectural Police. She wants to interview him about some case in the past and persistently chases after him. Then Watase receives word of a case … …
