Synopsis: Genius mathematician Oka Kiyoshi (Sasaki Kuranosuke) has achieved fame in the field of mathematics now. But there was a time when he had difficulty gaining the understanding of the Japanese mathematics community. Born in Osaka and a graduate of Kyoto Imperial University (now known as Kyoto University), Oka was a bizarre man who wore rubber boots even on sunny days and worn-out suits without neckties. When he studied abroad in France, he encountered Hartogs Inverse Problem in the theory of functions of several complex variables. This would become the theme of his life’s work and take him close to 15 years to solve. Shut away in the world of mathematics, he was distressed and frustrated due to his genius. His wife Michi (Amami Yuki) believed in him even though she was at the mercy of this. A stylish woman with an inquisitive and compassionate nature, she also had a sharp eye. No one recognised her husband and the household finances were in dire straits because of his devotion to mathematics. Furthermore, she could not understand his goal. They had three children and Michi grew tired of this tough life, but she stopped short of considering divorce. She became the person who understood him. Eventually Oka solved one difficult problem after another. Despite his numerous research achievements, he was not recognised in the Japanese mathematics community and this filled the Okas with despair and confusion. Even so, Michi understood the sincerity of her husband who grappled with mathematics, and single-mindedly overcame many obstacles with tenacity and love. It was only when he started receiving growing international acclaim that he was finally recognised by his own country and presented with the Cultural Medal in 1960.
