Synopsis: On the morning of 4 April 1959, Fujisawa Rokuro (Beat Takeshi), a Tokyo Metropolitan Police detective who is approaching retirement, finds the dead body of a young female on the bank of Genhakujigawa in Musashino while walking his dog. The victim is quickly identified because of the handbag she was carrying. She is Ikuta Setsuko (Kimura Fumino), an EAAL Airline stewardess. Besides her crew ID, there is an envelope addressed to her by express mail in the handbag. The sender is Guglielmo Church. Her clothes have not been disturbed, there are no signs of physical trauma and the expression on her face is also serene. Takakura Police Precinct has jurisdiction over the case and its detectives make light of Setsuko’s death in the belief that it was a drug-assisted suicide. However, upon an autopsy on Setsuko’s body on the advice of Fujisawa, it turns out to be death by asphyxiation from strangulation. In addition, semen, believed to have been left before the murder, is detected from the body. Unable to forget Setsuko’s peaceful look in death and deciding that this will be his last case, Fujisawa makes a direct appeal to Iwase Koichiro (Kunimura Jun), the head of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police’s Criminal Investigations Department, to let him join the investigation task force. He is ordered to partner the young detective Ichimura Yoshitaka (Eita) of Takakura Police Precinct. Although Fujisawa is the Tokyo Metropolitan Police’s ace, his tendency to defy the organisation and go out of control in investigations means that he is also trouble. Because of that, Ide Shinji (Kadono Takuzo), the head of Takakura Police Precinct’s First Investigative Division, and others try to make Ichimura closely monitor his movements. Before long, Fujisawa obtains an eyewitness account of a blue Renault with a numberplate only for foreigners stopped near the crime scene on the night of the murder. He also learns that Guglielmo Church, the sender of the envelope addressed to the victim, owns a blue Renault. Meanwhile, the young Father Tolbecque (Steve Wiley) emerges as a suspect. However, the police runs the danger of a diplomatic problem if they make a wrong move, and the top brass hesitates to summon him as a witness. A bitter Fujisawa continues his stakeout. Then one day, he sees the church’s parish priest Villier (Nicholas Pettas) talk to a beautiful, mysterious woman Ebara Yasuko (Takeuchi Yuko). Yasuko appears to be a pious believer who translates for the church, but lives isolated from the world in a house with strong dogs on guard. Fujisawa takes an interest in Yasuko who has an air that keeps people away, but … …
