They give their second son the name Manjiro. He grows up to be outstanding in his studies. However when Manjiro is 13, Gihei decides to send him out for an apprenticeship. Although Chiyo is against this, Manjiro (Watanabe Ao) listens to his father. Meanwhile, he has a dream of shimmering amber. Manjiro’s apprenticeship is with Konan Risuke (Nishida Toshiyuki), the owner of a drugstore who is very particular about his work and products. Konan has been developing wine which Manjiro takes an interest in. He helps out and the wine is finally ready to be sold. However, Risuke is astonished by the taste of popular wine in Tokyo and discontinues the western wine and spirits department without fulfilling his ambition. Four years later, Manjiro (Uchino Masaaki) who is now an adult, sets his mind on starting a spirits business and swings into action to make Japan’s best wine in order to repay Risuke. He heads to Kobe with a war chest of 100 yen (the equivalent of 1,000,000 yen today) from his older brother Chiezo (Namase Katsuhisa). Manjiro devotes himself to producing Japan’s first domestic whisky and eventually becomes the founder of the country’s biggest wine producer.
