Story
In 1989, organ transplants were still illegal in Japan. Performing a transplant was considered a long way off. One day, Toma Tetsuhiko, a surgeon who studied in the US, returns to the country and takes up a position at Kousei Memorial Hospital. It is a private hospital in the countryside of Kansai where his senior, Shimada Koji, now serves as the director. Toma believes that the level of medical care given in the countryside should be on par with university hospitals. He takes on difficult surgeries and saves the lives of patients with impressive skills. Hoping to save the lives of more patients, Toma also appeals for liver transplants which he learned in the US, and meets a like-minded doctor Sanekawa Go who has been brought into Omi University Hospital. Sanekawa is working on making liver transplants a reality and the two of them start on the path to entrench liver transplants in Japan. However, hospitals will not carry out liver transplants which come with significant risks, so as to save their own necks. The principle of absolute authority and the medical system which strongly adheres to antiquated practices, also get in their way … …
