Story
The passionate Yashiro Tomo and the intellectual Narumi Risa are detectives who belong to the Sixth Special Investigations Unit in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department’s First Investigative Division. The unit is in charge of deciphering documents of unsolved cases and the pair investigate such cases using Japanese characters. One day, Arita Kentaro, a popular lawyer who even appears on television, is found beaten to death while subject to public curiosity and criticism over an affair. What is unusual is the torn pieces of paper scattered around his body. When these pieces are pasted together, a disturbing sentence “I want to kill you again” emerges. The police promptly question Arita’s family, employees of the law firm where he worked and his lover, the actress Toyama Natsuki. However, they are not able to identify the likely culprit and the case goes unsolved. Five years go by. Detective Okabe Mamoru from the First Investigation Division’s Third Violent Crimes and Murder Investigations Fifth Unit visits the Sixth Special Investigations Unit with a request from his new boss Kuwabe Ichiro to figure out the documents of a new case. The victim is Kosaka Tatsuji, a daily-rated worker at a construction site who seems to have been set on fire by a man that fled from the scene. Kosaka was so horrifically burnt to death that his fingerprints could not be taken. The police found a piece of paper with the characters “I want to kill you again” written on it in his room. Upon hearing this, Tomo and Risa both suspect that his death is connected to the case five years ago. Koga Kiyonari, the head of the Special Investigations Unit who usually looks down on his sixth unit, uncharacteristically approves the investigation. It turns out that Kosaka and Koga were former high school classmates. Tomo triumphantly begins investigating and gets information about a mysterious shout like “Silent” or something that was heard around the time of Kosaka’s murder. Risa reviews the case from five years ago which uses the same expression and is hung up about it. However, there is no connection between Arita and Kosaka. Meanwhile, Tomo discovers Kosaka’s link to an unexpected person while taking a fresh look at his bookshelf. At the same time, her senior colleague Kusaka Shinji gets curious about something in the room. Kosaka’s cousin Kishitani Noboru soon arrives at the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department from Shizuoka Prefecture to claim the body. Shocking facts related to the two cases are revealed from his story. Meanwhile, Risa reacts strongly to some new Japanese characters. What terrible thing has she picked up?
Characters
Haru as Yashiro Tomo
A detective of the Sixth Special Investigations Unit of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department’s First Investigation Division. Rank: Sergeant. She adored detectives in detective dramas since young and became a police officer after she graduated from high school. She inherited the physical strength of her father who is a karate practitioner and is confident in jujitsu. She used to belong to the First Investigation Division’s Violent Crimes Unit and was on the frontline of criminal investigations. She tends to act without thinking and was often called a simple fool by her superiors. After she was transferred to the Sixth Special Investigations Unit, she cracked a series of unsolved cases based on the clues that her boss Narumi Risa found from the huge volume of investigation materials. She is still enthralled by this investigation method of using characters as clues to unravel mysteries.
Suzuki Kyoka as Narumi Risa
A detective of the Sixth Special Investigations Unit of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department’s First Investigation Division. Rank: Assistant Inspector. She possesses the rare ability to guess the personality and thoughts of the writer from a few documents. She boasts that she loves words more than people and holes up in the unit’s document room in the basement. She finds ways to make a break through for investigations of cold cases by deciphering documents. At the same time, she also frequently surprises the people around her with psychological terms and offbeat reasoning derived from them. She always seems composed but she has a cute side too when she gets terribly shaken when the unexpected happens.
Sawamura Ikki as Koga Kiyonari
The head of the Special Investigations Unit of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department’s First Investigation Division. Rank: Superintendent. He manages all six special investigations units which specialise in unsolved crimes. He is an upstart who worked his way up and is extremely proud as a detective. He was originally the head of the First Investigative Division’s Violent Crimes Unit but her was selected to be the head of the Special Investigations Unit to shore it up. However, he is filled with the sense of humiliation of someone put out to pasture. He is driven to achieve results and get back to the First Investigative Division’s star unit, and always shouts at his subordinates. He particularly looks down on the Sixth Special Investigations Unit which he considers to be unnecessary and constantly chastises Yashiro Tomo with great sarcasm that borders on immaturity.
Tanihara Shosuke as Kunikida Tetsuo
The new head of the Sixth Special Investigations Unit of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department’s First Investigation Division. When he was a detective with the Kyoto Prefectural Police’s First Investigation Division, he cooperated in one of the investigations by the Sixth Special Investigations Unit and had liked Yashiro Tomo. He is a capable man and this time he leaves Kyoto to join the unit. As might be expected of a man from Kyoto, he has a restrained gentility and takes a slight dig at people sometimes if fed up. After he becomes the head of the unity, he acts as a go-between while displaying sound and calm leadership to allow his team to proceed with investigations without interruption.
Takada Junji as Giitsu Yoshinobu
The head of the Sixth Special Investigations Unit of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department’s First Investigation Division. Rank: Inspector. The direct superior of Yashiro Tomo, Narumi Risa and Kusaka Shinji. He is a good-natured man and deftly brings together the members of the unit who have very different personalities. Although it is hard to tell what he is thinking about, he is in fact sharp and eloquent. He is even respected by his boss, the sarcastic Koga Kiyonari. He evades complaints from other units that express displeasure with the Sixth Special Investigations Unit which is publicly known to specialise in deciphering documents, and becomes a bulwark for his subordinates. He picked out Risa for her talent and is the one who thought of making the two of them partners. However, he is a hen-pecked husband at home.
Endo Kenichi as Kusaka Shinji
A senior staff of the Sixth Special Investigations Unit of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department’s First Investigation Division. Rank: Assistant Inspector. He is honest to a fault, serious and very taciturn. He was a detective willing to use his legs and had a lot of patience in investigations. However, after he was transferred to the unit, he seldom went out to crime scenes and mainly moved document boxes. He is called “Frankenstein storekeeper”. But Yashiro Tomo’s transfer to the unit revived his passionate “pilgrim detective” with documents as a weapon, and he eagerly trained her. He used to be too dedicated to investigations which caused his wife and child to leave him. He secretly has feelings for Narumi Risa.
