Synopsis
Seko Ririko belongs to the accounting department of a major publisher, Kusunoki Publishing. She is poor at understanding people’s feelings and reading situations. However, she has a strong desire to learn about the world and other people as well as the ability to perceive slight contradictions and mistakes. In the department, Ririko is nicknamed Cerberus, after the dog that guards the gates to the underworld in Greek mythology, for her strict checks. Recognising her potential, Niwa Masaki enlisted her cooperation to take down a rival. After becoming an executive officer, he decides to order Ririko to turnaround Kanfuru News, an online news site run by Kusunoki Publishing. Under its chief editor Yamada Reiji who has a laissez faire approach, the all-male editorial staff have only been publishing comments that are copied and pasted from other companies’ news and blog posts. The page views are around 500,000 a month and there are barely any advertisements. Ririko arrives at the editorial team with the goal of increasing the page views and develops a strategy to attack with gossip. In the process of gathering information and posting articles for this purpose, Ririko slowly begins to find significance in her work in online news that she had thought unnecessary in the world. As the men around her come in touch with her straightforward working style and extremely awkward and innocent side, they grow to like her. And she also grows through her interactions with them.

Kuroki Haru as Seko Ririko
A staff member who suddenly comes to Kanfuru News’ editorial team from Kusunoki Publishing’s accounting department. While she is insightful and able to spot slight inconsistencies and mistakes, she cannot understand people’s feelings and read situations. Her favourite book is the dictionary. She pays a lot of attention to the original meaning of words and has an argumentative side. Even though she does not show much emotional expression, that does not mean that she has no emotions. She is just not good at accepting her own feelings and expressing them. While she is not comfortable engaging with people, she has a strong desire to learn about the world and other people. As a child, she understood that she would get praised if she achieved certain established targets and numbers rather than words or deeds. She constantly gives herself challenges to accomplish and also appreciates being given a challenge.
Mizobata Junpei as Nezu Michiharu
A staff member of Kanfuru News’ editorial team. A cynical person who says a lot of offensive things. However, he is eloquent, competent and good at cajoling people. He almost feels a sense of resignation about the world today and has lost the energy to work hard. He aspired to be a reporter because of his father and joined Kusunoki Publishing. He duly became a reporter of Shukan Kanfuru. But when he was 29, a scandal that he wrote about caused trouble and he became discouraged. Since then, he has adopted a perfunctory approach to work as long as he gets paid. After it became Kanfuru News, he is mainly in charge of a weekly column for well-known writers and entertainment-related interviews. He is good at giving sensational titles for the articles that will increase page views. He practically lives in the company because in his opinion, it is too troublesome to go home. He often skives and stays in the sauna.
Nomura Shuhei as Shimouma Shuto
A staff member of Kanfuru News’ editorial team. He has a friendly and cheerful personality. He does not try to hide his popularity with girls and superficially socialises with many of them. He is in charge of articles on sports as well as internet trends such as celebrities on social media, YouTubers and TikTokers. He works fast as he is resourceful but the content of his articles are not substantial – something he himself acknowledges too. While he is truly popular with girls, he is not serious about love and as a result, his relationships are a little bit of this and that. As he is grandma’s boy, he occasionally lets slip knowledge that is quite unlike a young man.
Nomaguchi Toru as Kabatani Seiji
A staff member of Kanfuru News’ editorial team. He typically jokes around with Nezu Michiharu and Shimouma Shuto and shows the dignity of an adult. However, his true feelings are difficult to read. There are times when he lets out what he really thinks and displays melancholy. He was Shukan Kanfuru’s ace reporter until his 30s, scoring a string of scoops. But when he was 40, his wife ran off and they got a divorce. As a single father, he dropped out from the rat race in order to raise his son, and moved to the Niori team which mainly handles lifestyle information. After Shukan Kanfuru became Kanfuru News, he has been in charge of articles on gourmet food and cooking recipes as well as advertising. His son is currently a junior high school student. He is a compassionate man even though he does not show it, and still takes care of the people involved in the issues that he collected information on for the articles that he was formerly in charge of.
Ishii Anna as Ichimoto Makoto
A new staff member of Kanfuru News’ editorial team. She thinks her work at Kanfuru News, which covers juicy topics such as celebrity gossip and comments from other companies’ news and blog posts, will not benefit the world in any way and is nonsense. She was assigned to the team slightly before Seko Ririko but has only been shoved miscellaneous tasks by the other staff and feels baffled that she mostly does not have to come into office. She believes that she is the most normal among them. She joined Kusunoki Publishing because she wanted to get into the editorial team of a youth manga magazine. As a realist, she secretly hopes that she can transfer over some day if she spends her time here unobtrusively and quietly. She loves fashion and cosmetics but also likes manga and anime and uses a social media account for her interests. She also has an anonymous account which she uses to air her daily frustrations.
Ando Masanobu as Niwa Masaki
An ambitious executive officer of Kusunoki Publishing. He is quick-thinking and wily. During his time in the human resources department, he recommended Seko Ririko work for the company at an interview to hire new graduates. Ririko was unable to offer compliments and frankly pointed out the company’s problem areas even at the recruitment interview. Although other employees opposed hiring her, he had a different opinion. Wanting to change the conservative and outdated company, he found her refreshing and assigned her to the accounting department.
Namase Katsuhisa as Yamada Reiji
The editor in chief of Kanfuru News. He has a mild-mannered, laid back personality and because he is the type to avoid disputes and friction, Kanfuru News’ performance has not improved. He is an analogue person who still uses a traditional mobile phone.
