Synopsis: Ito Noe (Yoshitaka Yuriko), a champion of women’s liberation in the Taisho era, grew up in a poor family in Fukuoka’s remote countryside. She admired Hiratsuka Raicho (Matsushita Nao) who wrote the words “In the beginning, a woman was the sun” which inspired her to reject the marriage she was being pressured into by her family. Noe plotted to escape to Tokyo, marrying a former teacher Tsuji Jun (Inagaki Goro) at her school who was also a central figure in Japan’s Dadaism movement. Longing for freedom, she joined Raicho’s literary magazine Seito, the first publication in the country created by a woman for women. As its editor, Noe challenged the prevailing views on marriage and social morality head on. After parting ways with her first husband, she met Osugi Sakae (Nagayama Eita), the foremost figure in Japanese anarchism. He was already married but his belief in free love led to relationships with newspaper journalist Kamichika Ichiko (Minami) as well as Noe. Despite being stabbed by a jealous Ichiko in what became an open scandal, Osugi gradually become Noe’s better half. However, Noe’s life was snuffed out senselessly at the mere age of 28 along with Osugi and his nephew in what became known as the Amakasu Incident led by Lieutenant Amakasu Masahiko (Otoo Takuma).
