Synopsis
Sakurada Kazuhiko, a struggling host at a club in the outskirts, does not have any hope for the future and simply wastes his life away. He unfortunately gets hit by a garbage truck and ends up dying in this freak accident. The next thing he knows, he has become a ghost staring at his own dead body at the accident scene. Sakurada realises the people around him cannot hear or see him, and feels at a loss. But he eventually encounters a ghost called Momoyama Tetsuro who takes him to the second floor of a soba shop which serves as a living space. Besides Momoyama, there are three other ghosts Sasaki Saki, a former nurse; Kobayashi Rin, a high school girl; and Sen Rikyu, a tea ceremony master from 400 years ago. Sakurada is invited by Momoyama to live together. Life with these highly individualistic ghosts prompts him to reexamine his own life which he had thought was like garbage and to face the regrets that he secretly harboured. Sakurada had no attachment to living while he was alive but he begins to regain the humanity that he had lost during his time with the ghosts.
Characters
Yagira Yuya as Sakurada Kazuhiko
A club host who does not have any hope or dreams for the future. He just idles his time away until he meets a freak accident and ends up dead. However, he is not able to rest in peace and finds himself living together with other ghosts who have similarly died with regrets.
Kawaei Rina as Sasaki Saki
The ghost of a former nurse who died from overwork. She is married and has a daughter who is in elementary school. But she secretly worries about not knowing what love is. She may be sarcastic and curt but is awkwardly kind.
Matsuda Yuki as Suetsugu Machiko
An exuberant and obsessive fan of Sakurada Kazuhiko when he was a host. She has a strong ability to sense the supernatural. Even after Sakurada becomes a ghost, she continues to be his supporter and eventually ends up frequenting the soba shop where he and the other ghosts live. She actually knows an important secret about Sakurada’s death.
Kagaya Soya as Momoyama Tetsuro
The ghost of a struggling standup comedian. He is the one who approaches Sakurada Kazuhiko not long after he passes away and proposes that they live together. He takes good care of Sakurada and develops a unique friendship with him.
Nagasawa Itsuki as Kobayashi Rin
The ghost of a high school girl. She had been unenthusiastic about everything due to her complicated family situation. But at the time of her death, she had thrown herself into dancing with synchronised arm movements. She is cold towards Sakurada Kazuhiko for some reason. She would slip out of the house every night and go somewhere.
Sanyutei Koraku as Sen Rikyu
The ghost of the man who founded the tea ceremony. He has remained in this world ever since he committed ritual suicide in 1591. As he enjoys modern life and uses the smartphone with ease, he has no desire to attain nirvana. He is always philosophical and accepting of transience and imperfection. He watches over Sakurada Kazuhiko and the other ghosts.
Kusamura Reiko as Shinomiya Katsuko
The owner of the rustic soba shop where Sakurada Kazuhiko and the other ghosts live. She is kind and has a generous heart. She seems to be able to sense the presence of the “ghost family” even though she is a human as she prepares meals for them. But it is a mystery whether she has the ability to sense the supernatural.
