Synopsis: The transition from the Meiji era to the beginning of the Showa era was a time of turbulence. The Meiji era ushered in a period of cultural enlightenment in which Japan sought to build a nation that would not lose to the Western powers while the Taisho era saw the outbreak of the first world war. The Showa era was when Japan began to catch up with the world’s powers. It also gave rise to the miraculous development of Suzuki Shoten, a wholesale sugar dealer in Kobe, into a general trading company that thrived internationally. From dealing in daily necessities such as sugar and camphor, Suzuki Shoten expanded into steel and even ships. It had clients all over the world and generated the highest annual sales in Japan. This massive trading company was built up by the owner Suzuki Yone (Amami Yuki) and her general manager Kaneko Naokichi (Oguri Shun). Yone had married Suzuki Iwajiro (Namase Katsuhisa), the first generation owner of Suzuki Shoten. Despite her conflicts with him and his cold treatment, she had his child and was doing well as the wife of a merchant. However, Yone’s life took an unexpected turn because of his sudden death. At a time when females had yet to participate in society, she found herself at the top of a company with 25,000 employees all around the world as Suzuki Shoten’s owner. The person who supported and guided her was the servant, Naokichi. He had clawed his way up from a life of poverty in Tosa. Bound by strong ties and a relationship of deep trust, Yone and Naokichi grew Suzuki Shoten into Japan’s biggest company in the country’s economic history with extraordinary speed although they were at the mercy of the turbulence of the period. However, the two of them who had overcome many predicaments would be faced with their biggest crisis … …
