Episode 1: The bombing in the metropolis … The Public Security ace who lost his wife vs the amnesiac professional killer (Airs 10 April)
At 5.08 p.m., an explosion rips through a bustling shopping street in Hibiya, Tokyo. The street is covered with rubble in an instant and dust swirls. Several moans echo. People covered in soot plead for help, young people attempt to make a record of the scene with their cameras, a young girl cries as she stands rooted to the spot staring at something. The hospital where they have been taken to is overflowing with many dead and injured.
The police announce that the possibility of terrorism would be investigated in this large-scale, devastating explosion. At the Medical Examiner’s Office, Inspector Kuraki Naotake of the Public Security’s First Special Service Division is checking on the dead body of a person who was at the centre of the blast when he learns that one of disfigured corpses is that of his wife, Chihiro. Assistant Inspector Osugi Ryota of the First Investigative Division who had shown Kuraki around, speaks to him with concern. However, Kuraki neither grieves nor gets angry. He probes Osugi about the details of the case as if he were interrogating him. “Why did my wife have to die? I want to know the real truth.” This strong desire for the truth propels him into action.
Meanwhile, Shingai Kazuhiko is held at gunpoint at the top of a cliff. He is told by the men who have edged up to him, “You’ve been sacrificed by the shrike,” and is kicked down the cliff.
On an early morning several days after the explosion, Osugi detains Sergeant Akeboshi Miki of the Public Security’s Second Division while she is running in a park. She was near the scene at the time of the explosion, but states during questioning that that was mere coincidence. Osugi guesses that Miki is hiding some information and presses his luck, but she coolly dodges him.
The investigation proceeds and Kakei Shunzo, a freelance writer whose dead body was found at the scene, is identified as the bomber. According to eyewitness reports, right after Kakei rushed towards Chihiro at the shopping street, his bag exploded. Kuraki, who has not been allowed to participate in the investigation by his superior Muroi Gen because he would let personal feelings get in the way, makes contact with the top members of the cyber terror group that Kakei belonged to on his own. Dangling evidence of their past offenses, he gets them to divulge, “Kakei claimed he would soon threaten a big shot and had obtained explosives”, “He said the drop-off was at a coffee shop”.
Wondering if he should be suspicious of Kuraki, Osugi starts to probe his background. That night, Kuraki reaches out to Miki who has returned home from work. She gives him the same brush-off as she had done with Osugi and tries to leave. However, Kuraki will not allow that. Feeling “terrified” of him, Miki talks about pursuing a man called Shingai Kazuhiko at that time, and seeing Kakei with a mysterious woman after that.
On the other hand, in a hospital ward in the outskirts of Tokyo, a young man who was taken to the hospital from the bottom of a cliff, regains consciousness … …
